Repairing
Drywall
Tape Seems
Introduction:
Drywall
tape can
separate
and peel
away from
wall
corners for
a couple of
reasons. It
usually is
a problem
associated
with new
houses
because the
spackle
used to
hold the
tape in
place was
to dry or
there just
wasn’t
enough
applied to
the drywall
before the
tape was
put on.
When this
occurs the
tape peels
from the
drywall.
Repairing
drywall
tape is
easy to do.
The only
tools you
will need
is a 6 inch
drywall
taping
knife, a
utility
knife, a
roll of
drywall
tape, sand
paper or
drywall
screen, and
some joint
compound.
How to
repair
peeling
drywall
tape:
To repair
the peeling
drywall
tape start
by lightly
sanding
over the
peeling
drywall
taped area.
Then use a
utility
knife to
score the
far edges
of the
peeling
drywall
tape. Make
sure you
make your
cuts just
beyond the
ends of the
peeling
tape.
After
scoring the
drywall
tape, use
the utility
knife to
peel away
the old
tape. Then
lightly
sand over
the seam
with sand
paper or
drywall
screen.
Use a 6
inch taping
knife to
apply a
liberal
amount of
joint
compound to
the old
seam. Lay a
new piece
of drywall
tape over
the seam.
Work the
tape into
the joint
compound
and apply a
thin layer
of joint
compound
over the
top of the
drywall
tape. Don’t
press the
drywall
tape so
hard into
the seam
that all
the joint
compound
squeezes
out from
behind the
drywall
tape.
After
the new
drywall
taped seam
and joint
compound is
fully dry,
lightly
sand the
edges and
any ridges
of dried
joint
compound on
the seam.
Apply a
skim coat
layer of
joint
compound
over the
seam. Flare
the seam
out a
couple of
inches
wider on
either side
of the
seam. Allow
the taped
seam to
thoroughly
dry before
painting.
