DIY by Yourself
Introduction: DIY (do it
yourself) has become a household word for many home
improvement projects. DIY by yourself is a project
or a task explained in simpler terms and small
steps. With DIY by yourself projects information,
everyday people can perform home remodeling
projects and tasks without having too much
difficulty.
You do not necessarily have to have special
knowledge or skills to perform these do it yourself
home improvement projects. This eliminates the need
to hire professionals. Being self reliant is
usually the ethic involved in DIY.
The concept and ideas if DIY began back in the
1970s with the punk movement music. The punk
movement was when many young bands started becoming
independent and self reliant. They recorded their
own music, made their own records, and eventually
sell them themselves. They even book their own
tours. They also refused to use normal venues for
their concerts. Instead they would perform in a
basement of one of the band members or a local
school without charge. Their purpose was to avoid
commercialization.
DIY took hold and spread to include more personal
tasks instead of just including bands. This led to
the tutorial guides or “how to do it guides” or
“task guides” that are made to instruct people how
to do things. In the beginning it started out as
“how to make your own shirts” or “how to make your
own posters” type of projects.
DIY eventually evolved into building projects such
as “DIY Birdhouse” and “DIY Home Improvements”. It
also included how to do things such as “DIY Hair
Extensions” and “DIY Solar Panels”. DIY is not for
restricted to just one age group, it is for
everybody who is interested in doing things
themselves.
Today DIY has become extremely popular in North
American and European countries. It appears to be
the peoples' way of retaliating against the heavy
reliance of the industrial society on mass
production. Many early DIY enthusiasts were against
the exploitation of labor in developing countries.
Therefore it became like a boycott of the major
companies that exploit the labor force of
impoverished countries. Instead of buying from this
multimillion dollar company’s DIY enthusiast
usually buy goods and services that are made
locally. The motto of these early DIY groups was
“Think globally and act locally”.
DIY is not just making your own clothes or growing
your own vegetables. DIY also includes your
transportation from place to place. It is choosing
to ride a bike and fixing it yourself. DIY is
choosing to take public transportation. It is using
alternative energy like solar and wind powered
electricity. DIY includes using a hybrid vehicle or
using biodiesel fuel.
DIY by yourself is really just an expression of
individual self reliance. It’s a movement of people
with similar views and values. It is now grown into
a movement that protests against the multimillion
dollar companies and “rip-off” local contractors.
DIY is for anyone and everyone. It is a way for you
to find your own self reliance and capabilities.
Whether it is a DIY plumbing project or a DIY
construction project there is a DIY project out
there for everyone. Everyone has a little piece
inside of them that wants to prove that they can do
it just like the pros do. All you have to do is
find the right DIY project and get started.
