Plumbing Noise in You Plumbing
System
Introduction:
At times the plumbing makes so
much noise you may thing you have uninvited guests
living in the basement. Noises in the plumbing
system can be scary because you don’t know when
noise will be repeated or the cause. Plumbing noise
is more prevalent in older houses that newer ones.
Most new homes use a lot of plastic or PVC piping
which is less noisy than old metal piping. Do not
despair; most of the plumbing noise in your
plumbing system can be eliminated.
Some of the plumbing noises
are potentially serious issues that should be dealt
with and some are not really any big deal at all.
Before you can know the potential impact of what is
causing the noises you must identify exactly what
is causing the noise. The most common plumbing
noises are hissing, rattling of pipes and
screeching. The cause of each of these noises can
be determined and in most cases the homeowner can
identify the cause himself without the cost of a
professional plumber.
Hissing noise:
A hissing noise is one of the
most common plumbing noises. This most often
happens when you turn on a faucet. The cause is
usually because the water pressure is too high. The
solution is to install a valve that will reduce the
water pressure and remedy the noise.
Pipe rattling sounds:
This pipe shaking rattling
noise usually takes place when shutting off a
faucet. It is most often caused by water pressure
waves and is more common in older homes than newer
ones. This sound can also be caused when water
rapidly enters a pipe that doesn't flow freely due
to a change in direction in the piping such as an
elbow connection or a "T" joint fitting. This noise
can be remedied by installing an air chamber and /
or shock absorption fittings.
Screeching noise:
A common problem is a sharp
screech when you open a faucet. The screech is
brief and will often stop as soon as the faucet is
completely open. This is usually caused by a bad
part in the faucet. You can rebuild the faucet
yourself or replace it. If you have rebuilt the
faucet before to remedy the problem you may want to
consider replacing it. Rebuild kits are available
at most hardware stores for just about any faucet
imaginable.
This is how to fix plumbing
noises in your plumbing system. These three noises
are the most common noises in home plumbing
systems. If you are not sure of what the cause of
noise in your plumbing systems a professional
plumber should be consulted.
