How to Save Leftover Paint
Properly Saved Leftover
Paint Can Save You Money
Introduction:
Paint is expensive, nearly
$40.00 a gallon depending on the type of paint, the
manufacturer and where you buy it. Any leftover
paint should be saved because no matter how careful
you are, there usually comes a time when you need
to do a little touch up painting. When it comes to
touching up, you want the same paint as the
original paint and the best way to insure that you
do is save any leftover paint.
Each container of paint is
usually a custom mix.
Even if you have the formula, there are no
guarantees that the color of a new can will be an
exact match to your previously paint. The best
insurance for a perfect match is to save the
leftover product.
How to save leftover paint:
- There are several
steps that can be taken to extend the life of your
leftover paint.
Caring for paint begins the moment you open
the can.
Here are some tips.
- Before you start
painting do all the preparations work of the area
before opening the can.
This includes assembling your tools, taping
and placing drop cloths.
- Paint stores do a
good job of mixing the paint when you purchase it.
Depending upon the quality of the paint, no
stirring is necessary if it is used within 24 hours
of purchasing.
- Remove the lid
carefully with a paint can opener.
Most paint stores will provide them free of
charge. Prying the can open with a screwdriver or
other tool may distort the lid, making it difficult
to create a good seal when you are ready to store
the leftover paint.
- Exposure to air is
what makes paint harden due to evaporation. You
should minimize the number of times you open the
can. Do not leave it open while you are painting.
It is best to pour a small amount of paint into a
smaller paint bucket or roller pan rather than
using the original paint can as a working bucket.
Pour paint into a small container or roller pan.
- Clean the top of the
can and replace the lid.
For a temporary cover use a shower cap, it
will help keep the paint fresh.
- If you are using
latex paint and it is too thick, place it in a
separate container before adding water to thin it.
If you add water directly into the can, the
remaining paint will spoil prematurely or mold will
form. Always discard any paint diluted with water.
- When you are done
painting, insure that the paint can lid is clean so
it will seal to prevent air from entering the can.
Excess air will cause paint to dry prematurely. If
you place a piece of plastic wrap inside the can on
top of the paint before replacing the lid it will
prevent a surface film from forming on the paint.
- If the can is less
than half full, transfer the remaining amount into
a smaller container so there will be less air
inside the can.
- Insure that the can
is sealed tightly by using a mallet to tap the lid
closed.
- Label the lid of
each can of leftover paint with the name and number
of the formula and where you used the paint.
That is all there is to it.
Saving unused paint will save you money from having
to buy more paint when it comes time to do a little
touch up painting.
