How to Paint A Garage Door
Painting a Garage Door
Introduction:
A garage makeover
is an easy DIY task for the homeowner, especially
if you have wooden or metal garage doors that
really look like they need a fresh coat of exterior
paint. I have two garage doors that are insulated
aluminum. My garage doors are light weight yet they
keep the unheated garage at least forty degrees
above the outside temperature during the coldest
winter days.
Although they are factory painted the color does
not match the house. I painted the doors with two
coats of semi-gloss exterior latex paint to match
the trim on the house and it took no time at all
and only cost about $23 for the paint.
The factory color was a flat white and a bit dated.
They really needed a fresh coat of paint. Of course
we spend some time choosing the right paint. I
recommend that you stay with a traditional paint
scheme rather that doing stripes and poker dots.
After all you do want to maintain a traditional
curbside appearance.
I actually started this project at around 9:00 in
the morning just before the warmest part of the
day. I
finished well before noon and it came out looking
great.
The paint was applied using a regular wool roller
although the paint people at the paint store
recommended a foam roller. Foam rollers tend to
make bubbles in the paint that are difficult to
work out. In addition to the roller, a regular
three inch angled brush was used to get into all
the cracks and trim out the edges. By the time the
first coat was finished the doors were ready for
the second coat. The second coat went much faster
than the first coat and the final paint job came
out beautiful. The garage as well as the front of
the house has a new look about it.
Painting garage doors is an easy DIY project that
can be completed in a couple of hours. Not only
will a fresh coat of paint spruce up your home and
give it a new roadside appearance, it will also
help preserve and protect the doors against the
elements of Mother Nature. Don’t hire a
professional painter to do the job, you can DIY.
Use a good quality latex enamel exterior paint for
best results.
