Exterior House Painting Tips
Painting Tips
Introduction:
Each summer
thoughts of a lot of homeowners turn to refreshing
the exterior of their home with a fresh coat of
paint. This is particularly true for those homes
that have stucco external walls. For many
homeowners the process of digging out the paint
brushes from the garage or basement shelves is an
annual event and as you get older it becomes a less
enjoyable task and more costly as well as using up
valuable leisure or family time.
The climate in your location takes a toll on
exterior house paint. It undergoes severe stress
from the hot baking summer temperatures to the
frosts and biting wind or rain of the long winter
months. Unlike the people who add a protective
layer of clothing in winter or who can shelter from
the effects of extreme weather in summer, the
outside of our homes are left unprotected from the
elements except for the thin layer of house paint.
The harsh weather often causes the exterior paint
finish to peel, flake or blister. This results in a
much faster deterioration of the paint because the
moisture gets behind the paint and weakens it
further. In extreme cases this can also lead to
damp penetration through the wall and into the
interior of the home. If this happens there is a
strong possibility that the structure will suffer
from mold and wood rot.
Older house paints were far less superior from
today’s paint. The latest high tech paint exterior
house paint has led to a new generation of ultra
durable and weather resistant exterior house paints
which can bring end to annual house painting
regardless of the weather throughout the year .
These latest paint coatings are microporous which
basically means they stop any water from being
absorbed while still allowing the walls to breathe.
They are also UV resistant and maintenance free for
more than 20 years. Will it actually last that
long, probably not but they will last for many
years. If you have not used the new technology
exterior house paint you are in for a big surprise.
It really holds up great.
The new house paints on the market today solve the
problem of peeling and flaking paint by eliminating
moisture penetration.
Exterior House Painting Tips:
-
Always use new brushes. Paint brushes too have been
updated with new technology which makes the process
of applying paint much easier.
-
If you have a choice between spray painting or
brush painting your house I recommend brush
painting. By the time you prep for spray painting
you can have a good portion of your house already
painted. In addition, if you spray paint, it is
more likely you want get an even coating of paint
on the house.
-
Use latex enamel paint. It is much harder than a
regular latex paint. I do not recommend using an
oil base paint because it is difficult to work with
and even more difficult to clean up after you are
done. Latex paint is simply a joy to work with and
can be cleaned up with soap and water.
-
I recommend that you use a solid or transparent
paint stain. Paint stain is resistant to pealing
and flaking. Yes, you can get latex enamel paint
stain of nearly any color imaginable.
So if you are anticipating painting your house this
summer invest in the new high tech house paint. You
will be amazed on what a professional paint job you
can do as a DIY project. If you do you can make
this summer the last summer that you will have to
paint the house for many years.
