How to
Build a Dog
House Tips
Building a
Dog House
Building a
dog house
isn't
difficult
if you're
following a
basic
blueprint.
It only
takes about
a few hours
to build a
solid dog
house from
wood.
Follow
these “how
to build a
dog house
tips” to
build a dog
house that
will last
for years.
Ensure the
dog house
is the
right size
for the
dog:
This is one
of the most
common
mistakes
that dog
owners
make. Many
dogs are
quite
claustrophobic,
and won't
even use a
kennel if
it's
slightly
too small.
Measure
your dog
before
deciding on
which size
to build.
There are
three sizes
and types
of dog
houses:
1. First is
the
standard
size and
medium
sized dog
house. Both
small and
medium dogs
will feel
at home in
one of
these, as
it will
provide
plenty of
breathing
space. It
should be
large
enough to
allow good
air
circulation,
and small
enough to
keep warm.
2. Next is the
large or
premium
sized dog
house for
larger
dogs, or
perhaps
even two
smaller
animals.
Large dog
houses will
usually
include
some form
of
ventilation
holes and
include an
overhanging
roof to
protect
them from
heavy wind
and rain.
3. The third
and most
complex
design is
the duplex
dog house.
These are
great if
you've got
more than
one dog
with each
having
their own
space.
Building a
dog house
tips:
1. Insure that
the floor
is elevated
about 2 or
3 inches
above the
ground.
This will
allow air
to pass
under the
dog house,
keeping it
cool during
the day. It
also
ensures
that any
water will
flow under
rather than
into your
dog's home.
2. Slope the
floor
slightly
towards the
entrance.
This will
ensure that
any water
that
happens to
get in will
quickly run
out the
door.
3. When
building
the roof
attach
hinges to
make it
easier to
clean.
4. Consider
building a
flat roof.
Some dogs
like sit on
top of
their house
to enjoy
the sun.
5. Avoid
building a
dog house
with a
pointed
roof. This
will help
avoid wasps
and hornets
from
building
nests in
the roof
line.
I recommend
that the
basic
structure
be built
using T-111
plywood.
This
plywood is
made for
external
use and can
be painted
or stained.
The roof
should be
shingled to
protect the
dog house
from wood
rot.
