Checklist for Around
the House DIY Summer
Chores
Now that summer is
just around the
corner it is time
to do those DIY
chores around the
house to insure
that you are ready
for it. Here are a
few chores that
most DIY home
owners can perform
with little to no
difficulty.
1. Clean gutters to
remove leaves and
gunk that may have
built up during the
winter. Flush the
downspouts with
water and be sure
the gutters are set
to drain away from
the house.
2. Inspect the
exterior of your
home and make any
needed repairs.
Check the outside
walls for
deterioration such
as chipping paint,
loose siding or
damaged bricks. Pay
special attention
to the foundation
and hire a
professional to fix
masonry cracks if
you cannot make the
repairs yourself.
3. Check for loose
or missing mortar
around the chimney.
4. Have a
professional
contractor inspect
your air
conditioning system
and perform annual
maintenance
according to the
user guide.
5. Trim shrubs and
plants to no closer
than 3" from your
home. Pay special
attention to areas
with climbing vines
and near your air
conditioner's
condensing unit.
6. Check trees for
dangerous growth.
Prune trees that
can interfere with
electrical lines
and look for roots
growing too near
your foundation or
under the driveway
or concrete pads.
7. Check your roof
for leaks or damage
that may have
occurred over the
winter. Pay special
attention around
vents, skylights
and chimneys. Look
for loose or
missing shingles.
8. Drain the water
heater tank and the
sediment to prevent
mineral and
corrosion buildup.
9. Check indoor and
outdoor plumbing
fixtures and make
sure shut-off
valves are in good
working condition.
10. Clean the dryer
vent on your
clothes dryer and
check the exhaust
pathway is clear.
11. Give your
windows a deep
cleaning, inside
and out. Repair or
replace damaged
screens. Dust
blinds and vacuum
curtains.
12. Clean out
cabinets in the
kitchen and
bathroom. Throw
away old food,
medicine and
cosmetics.
Completing
this around the
house summer chores
check list will
insure that your
home is ready for
the summer season.
