Basic Do's and Don'ts for DIY Home Improvement
Projects
How to Avoid DIY Project
Mistakes
Introduction:
When it comes to completing a
DIY home improvement project, you must be aware of
common mistakes that you must avoid. There are many
possible common mistakes DIY homeowners make, and
to avoid them you research the project before
beginning. Listed below are common basic do’s and
don’ts for DIY home improvement projects.
1.
Never ignore safety
when it comes to performing a DIY project. Always
put on safety glasses and only plug in as many
cords as an outlet can handle. This will save you
from costly repairs or time wasting injuries. While
you may have to pay extra to have the right
equipment or to bring in a professional who knows
what he's doing, the additional cost will be worth
it when the job is done right and in a safe manner.
2.
While you may think
the additional cost isn't worth it, a coat of
primer will ensure that the paint doesn't peel. It
also makes the color bright and bold, and will
bring out the shade it is supposed to be. You can
buy paints with primer built in, which works very
well, and they save you an additional step.
3.
If you are working
on electrical work, only hire a professional with a
license to do the job. If they don't have a
license, they likely also don't have insurance
either, which could leave you in big trouble if
what they do goes wrong.
4.
If you are replacing
floors, be sure to install the subfloor or else
your floor will wind up unstable over time. If you
are using laminate, you need to have vapor barrier
beneath it to keep it from damage and to provide
soundproofing. If you are using hardwood, you need
a level subfloor.
5.
Be sure to check
with your local building inspector to determine if
any of the work you are doing will require permits.
If you don't get a permit, the work may have to be
torn down because it was created without the right
documentation to insure safety standards.
6.
Replacing your
windows means selecting an option which looks great
with the style of your home. You don't want to put
a contemporary window into a Victorian style of
house. Also be sure to pick windows which fit
snugly and offer you energy efficient features.
If you take these “don'ts”
into consideration, you will be prepared to tackle
any project and avoid the pitfalls where others
have falling. The end results will be spectacular,
and you'll be proud of the effort you put in to
your DIY project.
