Ladder Safety
How to Safely Us a Ladder
Introduction:
One of
the most common tools around any home is a ladder.
Whenever you need to clean the windows, hang up
Christmas lights or just get access to something
out of reach, a quality ladder is the right tool
for the job. It doesn't take a genius to understand
the risks involved with working at heights,
however, it never hurts to have a refresher course
on homeowner safety tips. Knowing how to stand on a
ladder may seem like common sense, but thousands of
people are severely injured every year from slips
and falls while using a ladder.
Being safe while performing
DIY homeowner tasks should be your number one
priority at all times. Here are some ladder safety
tips that will go a long way to insure your safety.
Ladder safety tips:
·
Always inspect the
ladder for structural integrity before stepping a
foot on the rungs to insure the ladder is in sound
condition. This means thoroughly checking all the
rails and rungs for any cracks or damage. If in
doubt, don't risk using the ladder.
·
Check the weight
rating and never sit or stand on the rung below the
top of the ladder. Make sure you use a ladder that
will hold your combined body weight and the items
you intend to use. The closer you stand next to the
top of the ladder, the less stable the base
becomes. The best spot is in the middle to maintain
a balanced center of gravity.
·
Use an extension bar
if cleaning windows above ground and never
over-extend your reach while on a ladder. Make sure
the feet of the ladder are securely planted and
that you have a safety harness on if you're going
to be working higher that ten feet from the ground.
·
Whenever
possible, have someone hold the base of the ladder
for you while you climb.
·
Use the ladder as
recommended by the manufacturer and insure the
stabilizer arms are fully open before ascending.
·
Don't walk
underneath a ladder to avoid any falling objects.
Keep track of tools and materials (especially
screws and bolts). These are safety hazards which
can cause severe accidents if dropped.
Always remember that when
using a ladder, safety should always be your first
priority.
