How to Maintain
a Home Disability
Ramp
Disability Ramp
Maintenance Tips
Introduction:
If you have a
member of the
family who is in a
wheelchair, or has
problems walking up
stairs, you
probably have a
disability access
ramp. Most DIY
homeowners build
their own
disability access
ramps because it is
less expensive than
buying a pre-made
ramp. The ramps are
usually made from
pressure treated
wood for the
structural
components and
mahogany wood
boards for the
finished surface.
This combination of
wood insures that
the ramp will last
for years before it
starts to decay
from the elements.
Disability ramps
are often the only
way a disabled
person has access
or egress from
their home. It must
always be
maintained in good
condition to avoid
injury to those
that depend upon
free access to the
home.
Disability
access ramps
require periodic
maintenance to keep
them in good
condition. The
maintenance
consists of
refinishing the
wood with a weather
resistant sealer
and replace the
non-slip tape on
the surface.
If you do not have
the capability or
tools to perform
these maintenance
tasks, then you
should hire someone
to do it for you.
The wood sealer
should be redone
every two years and
the non-slip or
anti slip surface
material should be
replaced or redone
annually to insure
that the ramp stays
in good condition
for easy access.
The handrails
should be inspected
for stability and
security. Any loose
hardware should be
replaced
immediately. It is
paramount the
access ramp does
not become a hazard
within itself.
If your home has a
disability access
ramp for home
access of a
disabled person,
insure that that is
maintained in good
condition at all
times. Remember,
disabled people
depend upon it.
