DIY Home Security Tips
How to Improve Your
Home Security
Introduction:
According to the FBI,
burglaries have been dropping steadily for many
years but there are still roughly 2.5 million
victims each year who experience house break-ins.
There is nearly twice that many thefts of tools,
grills and toys from yards and sheds. You can avoid
becoming part of these statistics by taking a few
precautions. Here are a few DIY home security tips
you can take to make your home less vulnerable to
house burglaries.
- Install window
shades in all windows that make it more difficult
to see whether someone is home.
- Upgrade locks on all
doors and windows. Door locks should all be dead
bolt locks. Use your door locks,
- Install timers for
some interior lights, televisions or radios to
create the illusion that someone is home when the
house is vacant.
- Install outdoor
security lights with motion or infrared detectors.
Always keep
a porch light on from dusk to dawn. If you use an
LED bulb it will use less energy and save money.
- Prune large shrubs
so intruders cannot hide behind them while prying
open a window or door. Thorny bushes are a good
deterrent.
- Join a neighborhood
watch group. These organizations are effective
crime deterrents because they encourage residents
to be vigilant and to call the police whenever they
see something amiss.
- Keep garage doors
closed, even while you’re at home, so thieves don’t
see items they may want to steal. Secure valuable
items, such as expensive bicycles and grills to a
very heavy object with a chain and padlock.
- Don’t record an
answering-machine greeting that says you are not
home. Never leave a note on the door indicating
that you are gone.
- Keep car doors
locked and windows closed. Never leave valuables,
especially electronics or money, in the car.
- During ongoing
home-improvement projects, store ladders out of
sight as they are an invitation to burglars. And
don’t leave tools such as hammers or pry bars out
where an intruder can pick them up and use them to
break in your home.
