Cell Phone Safety
Are Cell Phones Dangerous
Introduction:
The speculation as to the
safety of cell phone use has been common yet
passive in the media for several years. Some of
what has been written about cell phone safety has
been balanced and informative while some of the
comments have been little more than sensationalist
misinformation. Unfortunately there has not been
any extensive independent debate or advice to those
concerned about the dangers to personal safety of
cell phone use.
The main cause of concern of
cell phone safety is the level of radiation
emitted. Cell phones are a source of radiation and
in ordinary use they are held in close proximity to
the head. A proportion of the cell phone radiation,
10% to 50%, depending on the cell phone model and
the position in which it is held, is absorbed by
the brain.
It should be kept in mind that
modern cell phones use “discontinuous transmission”
which means that the phone only transmits
information and emits radiation when you actually
speak into the phone.
Thus far, the general
scientific consensus is that cell phones have not
yet been shown to pose a risk to human health nor
have they been proven to be entirely safe. Further
research is necessary to determine the safety
consequences of cell phones. Unfortunately the
rapid rate at which cell phone development and use
has grown has left insufficient time for detailed
research into its health implications. Governments
have imposed safety guidelines on manufacturers,
based on the amount of radiation absorbed by the
brain in normal cell phone use. A level of
uncertainty about the risks remains because there
has not been comprehensive research. The best that
we can conclude is that cell phones are believed to
be safe because the amount of radiation involved
falls within these guidelines. Any comprehensive
and long-term effects of cell phone use will not be
known for certain for a number of years.
In the meantime you can reduce
potential risk in the short term by following a
couple of suggestions. The first thing to do is to
take steps to minimize your exposure to cell phone
radiation. This can be done by using blue-tooth
technology which emits very weak radio signals to
connect the cell phone devices within a range of
about 10 feet.
The blue-tooth signals are
very low, about 1 milliwatt as compared to many
cell phones which can emit up to 3 watts.
Blue-tooth radiation is considered far less
hazardous than regular cell phone radiation.
The second thing to do to
reduce radiation exposure is to reduce the amount
of time you spend on your cell phone and use remote
devices as much as possible. Before you put a lot
of faith in what the cell phone manufactures and
the government says about cell phone safety
remember the fraud involved in the cigarette
smoking in terms of safety.
