The bathroom is usually the smallest room in your
home and at the same time it can be the most dangerous when it comes to
home safety. Drowning, burns, falls, poisoning and electrical shock are
the types of accidents that often occur in the bathroom. You should
always keep young children from playing in the bathroom. Children should
never be in a bathroom unless they are with an adult or at least watched
carefully.
Here are some bathroom safety tips to help keep your family safe
in the bathroom:
-
Prevent falls by installing grab bars by the
bathtub and shower.
-
Install non-slip strips in the bathtub and
shower.
-
Use only non-skid mats next to the bathtub and
shower.
-
Keep the bathroom floor clean of trip hazards
and dry.
-
Always use nightlights in hallways that lead to
the bathrooms and the bathroom.
-
Don't let young children use the sink or tub
without assistance. Stay close to children when they are in the
bathtub.
-
Know the things in your bathroom that are
poisonous if consumed. Look at the labels for the words "Caution,"
"Warning," "Danger," "Poison" or "Keep Out of the Reach of Children"
on the box or bottle labels.
-
Keep all medicines and cleaning products in the
containers they came in. Keep labels on them and place them out of
reach of the children.
-
All medicine and cleaning products should have
child safety caps.
-
All medicines, cosmetics and cleaning supplies
should be locked in a cabinet or at least have a child safety catch
on the door or draw.
-
Set water
heater to 110 degrees Fahrenheit to avoid burns.
-
If you use candles in the bathroom make sure you
extinguish them when you leave. Prevent electrical shock by keeping
hair dryers, curling irons and electric razors away from water.
-
Always unplug all appliances after using them.
-
The electrical outlet in the bathroom should
have a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI). It will protect you
from a dangerous shock in the event there is a short circuit in the
appliance that is plugged into the outlet.
