Bathroom Poisons
Home Safety Tips and Poisons in Your Bathroom
Introduction:
There are many things in the bathroom that can be
poisonous if children accidently eat or drink them. Medicines can be
dangerous for adults if they use them the wrong way and downright
poisonous to children. Read the labels on all medicine boxes or bottles
and if you see words like “Caution,” “Warning,” “Danger,” “Poison,” or
“Keep Out of the Reach of Children,” threat these products as poisons.
They should be kept in a locked drawer, medicine cabinet or some other
secured container.
Here are some tips to keep your family safe from
poisons in your bathroom.
-
If something could hurt a child if she
ate or drank it should be in a special container with a special cap or
top that makes it harder for children to open it. Child resistant
packaging helps protect children from poisoning.
-
Lock all medicines and medical supplies
in a cabinet or box. Keep the key in a safe place where children cannot
find it.
-
Do not keep medicines inside purses,
nightstand drawers, or other places where children can find them.
-
Keep all medicines in the bottle or box
they came in. Make sure you save the label. The label has information
your doctor or pharmacist needs in an emergency.
-
Remember that all medicines and vitamins
can be poisonous to children. Keep them locked up.
-
Make-up, vitamins, hair products and
cleaning materials can hurt children. Read the labels and store them in
a locked place.
-
If you take care of someone who uses
medications keep track of what they are taking. Use a pill holder to
remind you how much they have taken and write down this information.
-
Throw away medicines if you don't use
them. Look at the date on the label. If the date has passed, throw the
medicine away. Do not throw away old medicines in the sink or toilet.
They can poison our water and make people and animals sick. A safe place
is to put them in a sealed container in the garbage.
-
Remove all the labels before you throw
medicine containers away.
-
Crush old pills before you throw them
away. Mix the pieces into old coffee grounds, sand, or kitty litter.
Always be aware that all bathrooms can contain
poisonous materials. These bathroom poisons can be in the form of
medicines, cosmetics, or cleaning supplies. They should always be
protected from accidental use by children and adults by locking them in
a secure location.
