How to Make the
Best Out of a Small
Bedroom
Introduction:
Condos and
apartments never
seem to have enough
living or storage
space. You can
improve the living
space by how and
where you place the
furniture. Here are
few storage tips
for small space
condo and apartment
living.
In a small master
bedroom, place the
bed in the best
location. Minimize
the amount of
bedroom furniture
and locate the bed
central to the
room. Keep side
tables small so
they don’t crowd
the room. That will
free up floor
space. Don’t use
oversized lamps and
lamp shades. Scale
the lamps to the
side tables. Large
lamps will
overwhelm them.
For a crisp hotel
look, keep bedding
white or a solid
neutral color. The
number of pillows
should be kept to a
maximum of four and
coordinate two of
them to match the
solid colors.
If there isn't
sufficient closet
space, purchase
closed door
wardrobe systems
with modular
interiors to
provide flexibility
for storage of
shoes, belts and
sweaters.
Paint or
purchase the
wardrobes the same
color as the room
walls to keep them
in balance to the
rest of the room.
If you can squeeze
in a sitting area
in your small
master bedroom,
choose a location
close to a window.
Keep the chair to a
small size and
share the bed's
side table with the
chair. If your
window sill is low
enough, use a bench
as a window seat.
Most benches
provide storage
inside which is a
great place to
store extra bedding
and pillows.
Lighting is
critical to give
the allusion that
the room is larger
than it actually
is. Generally most
bedrooms use
sconces or table
lamps on either
side of the bed for
general lighting
with a ceiling
mounted fixture for
overall room
lighting. A series
of 4-6 recessed
lights on a dimmer
can replace a
ceiling mounted
fixture to give a
modern aesthetic
look and provide
flexibility in
lighting options.
For
lighting in a
sitting area, use
an adjustable floor
lamp just behind
the chair.
There are many
options for window
drapes and curtains
for the bedroom
including sheers,
drapes, horizontal
and vertical
blinds, roman
shades, wood slat
blinds and woven
wood blinds.
Use your
imagination and
avoid overcrowding
of furniture or
furniture that is
too large for the
room.
