How to Sound
Proof a Home Office
Sound Proofing Your
Home Office or
Room.
Introduction:
Modern technology
and the internet
has made it easy
for people to work
out of their home.
If you work out of
your home and need
a relatively quiet
area to work, a
sound proof room
can be easily
constructed to
provide a quiet
office. There are
several DIY
techniques that can
provide a
soundproof a room
by eliminating
noise issues. When
you are
concentrating on
your work any noise
can be distracting.
Here are tips and
suggestions on how
to sound proof a
home office or
room.
The way to stop
disturbing noises
is to block any
sound can get into
the room. The
easiest way is to
provide a solid
concrete wall with
drywall on both
sides but the wall
must not have any
holes in it where
noise can enter.
If there are holes,
seal them if
possible. If it is
not practical to
seal out unwanted
noise, consider
ways to absorb more
of the sound as it
passes through the
wall, ceiling,
floor, and door
materials.
Suggestion for
building a sound
proof office or
room:
1.
Change the door to
a solid core and
use foam weather
stripping and a
bottom sweep to
block any noise
penetration. An
exterior door will
work best.
2.
Caulk any ductwork
and outlet and
switch boxes where
they penetrate the
drywall and use the
foam insulation
pads made for
electrical boxes.
3.
Hang heavy wall
hangings on all
walls towards the
noise, if possible
hang the hangings
on both sides.
4.
Install a layer of
acoustic board and
then another layer
of drywall over the
existing interior
walls. This will
require extending
electrical boxes,
adding jamb
extensions to
doors, and
reinstalling
casings and
baseboard.
5.
If
the noise is
penetrating from
above, pad the
ceiling by nailing
perpendicular to
the joists 1x2
furring strips on
the ceiling with
3/4 inch rigid foam
in between. Screw
resilient channel
to the furring
strips, then hang
5/8 inch drywall.
Finish the drywall
installation and
paint as desired.
6.
If
you can open a wall
by removing the
drywall, fill the
wall cavities with
fiberglass
insulation
This is a DIY
project that will
provide you with a
sound proof office
or room. Remember
that what you are
doing is blocking
any openings to
keep the noise on
the outside of the
room. Try some of
these suggestions
and you may be
surprised by your
results.
