How to Hang Pegboards
Pegboards can increase your
storage space.
Introduction:
Pegboards are used in several
different locations such as the garage, work shop,
utility room, basements and even the kitchen.
Hanging pegboards might seem simple, but they must
be hung properly so they stay in place and safely
hold the heavy items hung on them. Installing
pegboards is an inexpensive way to add storage
space to a home.
They can also be very useful in a craft room
or a home office, and contrary to popular belief,
pegboards can look great in most locations if they
are hung properly.
The location for using
pegboards is virtually endless, and when painted
and decorated they can be quite stylish. Consider
all the ways on how to hang pegboards in your home
and you might be surprised by how much organized
storage space they can provide.
Selecting the right pegboard
and hardware:
Thin lighter weight pegboard
(1/8 inch) is ideal for hanging lightweight items
such as craft supplies, hand tools, and kitchen
utensils. If the pegboard will be used to hang
heavy items such as tools or shelving, use the
heaver pegboard (1/4 inch) that has been tempered.
Pegboard material comes in four by eight foot
pieces.
When shopping for hardware,
keep in mind that pegboard hooks are available in
widths that will fit 1/8 inch and 1/4 inch boards,
but some styles will work with both. Hooks are also
available in various lengths and shapes. Choose
heavy duty hooks for use with the thicker pegboard.
How to hang pegboard:
-
In most cases
furring strips are attached to the wall to mount
the pegboard on to. Depending on the overall size
of the pegboard you are installing, use three
quarter to one and one half inch wide furring
strips that are three quarters of an inch thick.
-
Screw the furring
strips to the wallboard so they screw into a wall
stud.
- Once the furring
strips are installed, attach the pegboard using
screws or nails.
-
The pegboard can be
painted in any design that matches your décor.
