DIY Wallpapering Tips
Preparing to
Wallpaper Your Home
Introduction:
Wallpaper is making a comeback in home finishing
and decorating. Nearly 60% of homes have some
amount of wallpaper on their walls. It may be just
one room such as the bathroom or kitchen or every
room in the house may be wall papered. Most home
wallpapering is done by the homeowner as a DIY
task. Wallpapering in not a difficult task nor is
it necessarily a fun task. It can be a very
frustrating experience but, there are a few things
that you should know before visiting your wallpaper
store.
You need to know the actual
measurements of the area that you want to
wallpaper. Measuring the area that you want to
wallpaper by measuring the length and width of the
wall to come up with the square footage. Take the
actual measurement and add 10% for waste.
Visit your local DIY wallpaper
store where you will be surprised on the variety of
different types of wallpaper that is available. The
type varies from the medium priced standard styles
to the more expensive vinyl. The primary difference
is how much scrubbing the surface can take before
it begins to look worn.
Most wallpapers come as
pre-pasted which means that all you have to do is
dip them in water to activate the paste. However,
non pre-pasted wall paper can be purchased, but it
will make the task a little bit more difficult.
When you
select your wallpaper, ensure that all the rolls
come from the same lot as there are slight
differences in color in different lots. The store
clerk will determine the number of rolls that you
require based on your measurements.
If you are new to
wallpapering, I suggest that you don’t begin by
using specialist wallpaper. Specialist wallpaper is
handmade paper and is difficult to work with as it
marks, tears and creases very easily. You should
have a lot of experience before using this type of
wallpaper.
Although wallpapering is much
more expensive than painting, it will last for many
years if installed correctly.
Good luck!
