Wallpaper Selecting
and Wallpaper Buying
Introduction: Wallpapering and
wall covering are a great way to decorate a home and is an
easy DIY homeowner project.
Wallpaper
has come back
into style in a big way. It was the item of choice before
wall paints were perfected as excellent water based covering
in the late forties. In today’s homes we see a variety of
painted walls and wallpaper walls.
There are so many choices
of wall paper that it can take you longer to make a choice
than it does to actually hang it. Wallpaper selection and
buying is not easy. If you are going to use it in
a kitchen or
bathroom it must be
washable and water resistant. Washable and water resistant
wallpaper is a vinyl, vinyl-coated or paper-backed vinyl
wallpaper. I do not recommend a paper or fabric wall covering for any areas that may get wet, humid or requires
frequent cleaning.
Cleaning foils, fabrics and flocked
wallpaper is difficult. They are best used in areas that
don't get a lot of traffic, humidity or dirty hand prints.
Some textured wall coverings are designed to be painted over
although I do not recommend it. However paintable wallpaper
does have its applications. It comes in many varieties of
textures and is great for covering rough walls or old
cracked plaster. Wall liners are used on poor condition
walls much like a primer. It covers and smoothes out seams
and cracks to give you a better looking finished wall.
Choosing the right color and pattern
is difficult at best. With so many wallpaper choices, the
best way to select the right color, texture and pattern is
to go to your local wallpaper store and look at wallpaper
books. Take them home so you can test a variety of different
coverings in your own home.
Some general tips for wallpaper selection and
buying:
- Large patterns work better for larger
walls because they tend to shrink the space.
- Larger
patterns and dark colors also make a room look more cozy
and intimate.
- Stripes are tricky to work with. Many
rooms are not completely square and the stripes may not
line up perfectly with your door and window trim. Before
you decide on striped wallpaper determine if your room
is square.
- Rooms that get little light look
better with warm tones instead of cool.
- When selecting wallpaper for a
child's room, pick one that isn't going to be dated or
babyish in the near future.
- Make sure the
paper goes with the ceiling or wall trim. You may want
to consider painting the ceiling and trim before you
wallpaper.
Buying Wallpaper:
I
do not recommending buying from an online store as you may
get rolls that do not match. However, shopping on line will
give you a good idea of prices and varieties as they have huge inventory.
Although your local
wallpaper store may have limited stock they usually can get
what you want within a few days and there is no question as
to the quality of what you are buying.
It is a good place to get
your wallpaper supply of paste, sizing and wallpaper tools.
Independent paint
and wallpaper dealers offer the best advice and
service even if the cost is a little more.
The clerk can be
very helpful in figuring out the quantity you will need for
your project. It is always better to order more than less.
If you have to order additional amounts you run the risk of
getting paper that is of a different manufactures run that
will not perfectly match
