Home Wind Power Generators
Why Home Wind Power Generators
are Not Practical
Introduction:
Home wind power generators may
be a great way to cut your home energy costs, but
the science behind wind generators just isn’t there
yet. In addition wind power generators will not
work for every home because there are different
circumstances for every homeowner depending on
where they live.
Most wind turbine generator
manufacturers are trying to satisfy the majority of
homeowners regardless of where they live and how
much wind is available.
The reality is that there are
only a few homes that are located near where there
is sufficient wind to generate power. In addition,
wind energy power turbines have a way to go in
there development for home application.
There are the two primary
reasons why home wind generators have a way to go
before they will be practical for use by most
homeowners.
First is that the minimum wind
speed for most wind generators to generate power is
too high. The minimum speed is referred to as the
“cut-in speeds”. This is a huge draback that
affects the wind generator market of today. The
majority of wind generators available on the market
today require wind in access of 6 mph to generate
power. Just because the rotor blades are turning
does not mean they are creating energy. The rotor
speed must be sufficient to overcome the turbine
internal resistance in order to generate any
appreciable amount of power.
The second problem with most
home wind generators is that the homeowner is left
to his own devices to figure out what is required
for his home application. Even though there is a
tremendous potential for home wind generator sales,
customers are left to figure out what exactly they
need in terms of which wind generator kit will work
for their location and application. There are few
if any dealers or manufacturers that will take the
time to help you through these decisions.
When you go
to a dealer for assistance the cost can be very
expensive. Dealers that do provide assistance can
get you into a wind turbine generator that will be
functional
for your location but
the drawback is that it will be very
expensive which makes the whole idea of installing
home wind power genitors cost impractical.
Home wind power generators can
be a great solution for you to reduce power costs
at home but keep in mind these two weaknesses. Your
location needs sufficient wind and the turbine you
select needs the lowest possible cut in speed to
start generating power. These short falls must
improve the home wind power generators before they
become practical and cost effective.
