Ceiling Fans and Lights
Adding Lights to Your Ceiling Fan
Overview:
Older
homes, homes that are inherited, and rental
properties often have outdated ceiling lights if
any at all. Homes that were built a decade ago
often need some form of redesign to update their
looks to include ceiling fans and lights.
Many homeowners
improve the look of rooms in their home by
remodeling with ceiling fans and lights. Remodeling
with ceiling fanlight fixtures can add a stylish
element into any room.
Modern ceiling fans
come in many compelling designs and styles from
different styles of fan blades and light fixtures.
The many different styles commonly found in most
light fixture stores include: Victorian,
Asian, and Western. Ceiling fans come with either
lights or no lights. You can also find ceiling fans
with funky or gothic blades and light fixture
designs. Both Hampton Bay ceiling fans and Hunter
ceiling fans are excellent sources for a wide
variety of ceiling fans with lights.
Ceiling fans serve
multiple functions in the home. They can have a
cooling effect as well as a supplemental heating
system to your home. The fan motor can rotate both
forward and backward to either bring air down or
lift it up.
By having them rotate backwards (in a
counterclockwise rotation) they can act as a
cooling system by blowing air towards the people
situated in the room. By having them in forward (in
a clockwise rotation) the fans pull the cold air up
and displace the warm air in the ceiling,
circulating it towards the floor during winter.
This is especially important for a room with a high
ceiling. By circulating the warm air you will save
on heat cost. The warm air that stays at ceiling
level is wasted heat.
The lighting
fixtures attached to the fan unit provide the
advantage of having ceiling lighting rather than
just lamp standing in a corner or on an end table.
The lights fixture can be a single bulb unit or a
multi bulb unit and most of them can be dimmed and
operated by remote control in addition to a wall
switch. The modern ceiling fans and lights will
create a room style that is much brighter and more
pleasant for family activities.
Wiring for ceiling
fans and lights is straight forward. Usually the
circuit is wired with a 14/3 wire that provides two
sources of power to the fixture through two wall
mounted light switches. One of the power sources is
to operate the fan and the other is for the lights.
This allows you to operate either the fan or the
lights separately or together. Combination fans and
lights fixture are quite heavy and require a strong
mounting box, usually metal, that is securely
attached to the ceiling with large screws.
Installing ceiling fans and
lights is a great way to refresh a room design and
provide a lot of utility values by improving
cooling in warm weather and redistributing warm air
during cold weather. The different styles of fan
paddles and light fixtures seem to be unlimited. A
DIY homeowner can install a ceiling fan light kit
in a couple of hours using standard household
tools.
