When fall comes to New England it’s time to get next year firewood cut, split and stacked for drying. Fall is a great time of the year to do this task because the weather is cooler, if not frosty. However, cutting, splitting and stacking firewood is not a task for the fainthearted. It takes a great deal of work.

We buy firewood by the log length and cut it to size using a chainsaw. This is the cheapest way to obtain firewood. We get between eight and nine cord from a truck load of log length firewood which brings out cost per cord to approximately $100. Buying firewood by the cord cost between $250 and $300 a cord.

After firewood is cut, it needs splitting and stacking so it will dry before using it next winter. Firewood needs to dry approximately a year before burning to get the moisture content below 10%. If it isn’t dry creosote will form in the chimney which can lead to a chimney fire.
