Toxic Household
Cleaning Chemicals
Dangerous Chemicals
in Your Home
Introduction:
Most homeowners
don’t realize it
but their homes
contain toxic
chemicals. Most of
these toxic
chemicals are in
the form of
cleaning supplies
that are used every
day for house
cleaning. We can
get rid of all
these toxic
chemicals by not
buying the products
that contain them
however, it would
make everyday house
cleaning very
difficult.
Commercial
household cleaning
products are found
in nearly every
grocery store. They
are made for
efficient and
convenient house
cleaning. For the
most part they
really do a great
job. But they also
come with a price,
and we pay that
price with our
health and the
impact they have on
the environment.
These cleaning
products are full
of different toxic
chemicals and they
can be dangerous. A
child is
accidentally
poisoned at home
approximately every
thirty seconds due
to exposure to
cleaning products.
The three harshest
chemicals found in
typical cleaners
are chlorine
bleach, sodium
hydroxide and
hydrochloric acid.
Chlorine bleach is
the worst in terms
of home poisoning.
This chemical is
very toxic if
ingested,
corrosive, and it
can damage your
respiratory system
if inhaled.
Sodium hydroxide is
found in many
automatic
dishwasher and
laundry detergents,
as well as oven and
bathroom cleaners.
This chemical is
corrosive and
causes skin and
respiratory track
irritation.
Hydrochloric acid
is a very dangerous
lethal chemical
found in toilet
bowl cleaners. A
mask and protective
gloves should be
worn when using
this type of
product. Even the
fumes are harmful.
These chemicals are
toxic to humans and
pets too. They are
also harmful to the
environment. When
flushed down the
toilet or poured
down a sink drain,
they end up in our
watershed and cause
severe damages to
aquatic life by
upsetting the pH
balance among other
things.
To be safe, get rid
of those toxic
household chemicals
as soon as you can.
In disposing of
them they should
not be flushed down
the toilet or even
put in the garbage.
They should be
brought to a waste
management facility
or recycling center
for proper
disposal.
