How to De-clutter Your Home
It’s
Spring Cleaning
Introduction:
It’s almost spring cleaning
time which means it’s a good time to get rid of the
clutter that has been piling up in your home. For a
lot of homeowners it is almost an obsession to save
everything that comes into the home. This creates
excess clutter and can be a hazard, depending on
the type of material you have collected over the
years.
It’s much easier to de-clutter
your home once you realize that your actions can
serve a good cause like saving trees, sparing
landfills, or adding a few dollars to your bank
account by having a yard sale. All these
suggestions are excellent motivators to de-clutter
your home. Here are few ideas of how to de-clutter
your home.
The first step is to take
inventory and sort out the clutter into three
groups; that which you sell, what you want to give
away and what is just plain junk that must go to
the recycling center.
If you have
been collecting stuff for a long time you most
probably have hazardous household materials such as
old paint or prescription medicine. These should be
taken to a recycling center where they have the
capability to properly dispose of them.
Old appliances, cameras,
computers, and televisions should also be taken to
a recycling center for disposal if there is no
market for reselling them. Old newspapers and those
endless catalogs can also be recycled.
Out-grown kids clothing and
toys can either be sold in a yard sale or donated
to a charity. In this era of high unemployment,
there is sure to be someone who will appreciate
getting them.
As far as old books go, you
can really cut down on your carbon footprint by
donating them to local libraries, schools, and
hospitals. You can also get rid of them by building
your own free library in your front yard and let
passersby help themselves.
If you have old towels,
blankets, heating pads, cleaning supplies or an old
car you need to get rid of, consider donating them
to your local animal shelter like the ASPCA. Every
shelter has different needs, from canned dog food
to office supplies.
