Exposed beam residential construction isn’t something you see very often in modern house building. It is of the post and beam design of the seventeenth century that seems to have long passed its time. It does look great in barns and sheds but exposed beams in homes today is very selected, usually by the older generation that has a hold on the past.

Timbers used as exposed beams can make a dramatic statement in virtually any room of the house although in contemporary home construction it is limited to one or two rooms such as entryways, great rooms and kitchens. After all, most people don’t want the living in a barn image throughout the entire house.

Something to consider before making a decision on where to use exposed beams in your house:
Where do you spend most of your time and do you want that time spent in a room with such a rustic look?
Does the house have the proper setting for such rustic architecture?
Would a different design add more value?
In which room would friend enjoy seeing the architecture and beauty of exposed beams?
Do you want a small change such as exposed beams in the kitchen, or a much cozy room like a den?
What will be the return on the investment, if any?
Will it increase resale value or value added?

Before making a decision on where to use exposed beams in your house ask yourself how much you will value the personal enjoyment of an exposed beam room in addition to your family and friends. Exposed beam construction can add atmosphere to your home but is it the kind of atmosphere you want in the long run. Guests may enjoy it, but they are not exposed to it day–after-day. If you change your mind, and want to redo the exposed beam look the cost will be expensive.

Consider all these factors before making a final decision as to where to use exposed beams in your home. Maybe it is not the best idea unless you are a throw back from the seventeenth century.
