yourself without the need of a contractor.
Patching a small hole in gypsum board:
-
Cut out a gypsum board patch that is a bit longer
and narrower compared to the hole. Tie a length of
string to a nail and drive it through the center of
the patch. Apply some plaster or spackle onto the
edges of the patch and insert it into the hole,
starting on one end. Make sure to hold onto the
string.
-
Pull the string in order to hold the patch against
the board's rear face and fill the indentations
with joint compound and cut off the string.
-
After it dries apply a second thin coat of joint
compound on the patch. When dry sand it down and
apply paint.
Patching a large hole in gypsum board:
-
For a large hole a large piece of gypsum board
needs to be cut to fit the hole. In some cases a
half sheet of new board may be required.
-
Remove the damaged area by cutting across the stud
or joist that the board is secured to. Make the
cuts straight down the center of the stud or joist
so the replacement patch can be attached to the
studs or joist. Discard the waste material.
-
Install the replace piece and secure it to the
studs or joists with screws or nails.
-
Tape the edges of the patch with drywall tape and
apply a layer of joint compound to the tape. Let
dry and lightly sand. Apply a second coat of joint
compound, let dry and lightly sand. A third coat of
joint compound may be necessary. If required apply
it in the same way.
