Brick Veneer Siding
Brick Siding
One of the types of brick used
as a home siding is actually a thin brick veneer.
This thin brick siding is used to clad the exterior
walls of a home to give the house a completed brick
look. This thin brick is often referred to as faux
brick siding. Brick veneer is also used in the
construction of patios, interior walls, fireplaces
and as a floor finish. Occasionally it is used as a
counter top finish.
Brick veneer gives the classic look of a brick
finish at a reasonable price. Brick veneer siding
is an excellent substitute for brick siding as it
not only gives the aesthetics of a brick finish it
is also economical.
The bricks used in brick veneer are made out of
clay mixed with cement and rock aggregates. The red
color is a result of the content of iron oxide in
the mixture. There are several other methods of
manufacturing brick veneers that provides a wide
range of choices in textures, thickness and
quality.
The different chemical composition of the mixtures
also produces various colors of brick veneers.
Installation of brick veneers depends upon the
purpose and type. Thin veneer can be installed in
the same way as ceramic tiles.
Another
method of installation is to mount these bricks and
lath onto plywood and then install the plywood as
one piece. Because brick is moisture permeable so
it should be coated with a vapor barrier between
the exterior walls and the bricks. Mortar is then
used to give the veneer a finished touch.
The advantage of brick veneer siding is its cost.
It is much less expensive than many other siding
choices. It is also light in weight which makes it
easy to install and does not require special
reinforced structures to bear the weight as a
regular whole brick siding. Brick veneer does not
rot or fade and is fire resistant which also makes
it an attractive option. Brick veneer siding is
relatively maintenance free. It may require washing
every few years to remove dust and dirt build up.
The easy maintenance, durability, longevity, color
choices and aesthetics are the characteristics that
make brick veneer an attractive alternative for a
finish siding. It is a great option for those who
want the elegance and class of a traditional brick
look at a reasonable cost.
