Basement Lighting
A basement by definition is that part of the lower structure of the
house that provides additional living pace as opposed to a cellar.
The basement may be completely below ground or only partly below
ground. In general terms we define a cellar as a non living space
below the house that is used for storage or for utilities.
A cellar
is usually completely below ground level with a few small
ventilation windows. Lighting in cellars is usually limited to a few
pull chain lighting fixtures.
Because basements provide additional living space that requires
lighting, installing adequate lighting can be a unique challenge,
especially when basements are constructed with low ceilings. To
compound the challenge many basements have few windows, making them
dark and drab. Adding the right type of basement lights can
create a brighter and homier atmosphere where the entire family will
love hanging out.
If there are windows in your basement the first thing you want to do
is accentuate the natural light. If the windows are small windows,
then you need to choose window treatments that will allow as much
light in as possible. To gain as much light as possible use very
light, almost translucent curtains. You should use tiebacks so
that during the day the curtains can be pulled back to let in as
much natural light as possible. An option is to use blinds that can
be easily opened and shut.
For painting the wall use light colors that will give the room a
more open appearance. White and off-white colors are always a good
options although pale green, yellow, or blue are also good options.
You can enhance the walls using hobby paint and stencils or
rubber-stamping in colors that coordinate with the wall color.
Recessed lights is the best choice for
basement lighting because they can be fitted into the ceiling
between the floor joists. They offer a great source of light for low
ceilings without making the low ceiling appear any lower than it is.
The best thing about recessed lights is they can be installed just
about anywhere in the ceiling. If there is not adequate room for
this type of lighting, you can always install track lighting or
ceiling mounted florescent light fixtures.
For floor covering stay with lighter colors that will give the
illusion of the room being larger and more open than it is. If the
rooms (rooms) are large enough use area carpets with several smaller
throw rugs. Pillows and afghans are also a great way to bring
brightness into the room. If you have dark furniture and floors,
place light colored carpets and furniture pillows to create the
illusion of more light. Using a dimmer switch or three-way light
bulbs also gives you more control to create the atmosphere you want.
Basement lighting can be a challenge but with a little imagination and
staying toward a light in color paint scheme you can create the
atmosphere you want and have a pleasant live in basement. A bright
colored wall on one or two sides of the room will also bring brightness
and a spark to the area. Be creative and check out ads or magazines to
