Nearly every DIY homeowner
gets involved with house painting and figuring out
how much paint is needed to do the job. The two
factors for how to estimate paint requirements is
the total square footage you intend to paint and
the spread rate of the paint.
A gallon of paint usually covers
approximately 400 square feet but that depends on
the texture of the material being painted. The
information on the paint can applies to a smooth
finish but if the finish is rougher, the gallon of
paint will cover less square footage.

To calculate the square
footage simply multiply the width of the wall (or
area) by the height the wall. If there is more than
one wall add them together to get the total area.

Calculate the area of all the
surfaces that will not be painted, such as windows,
fireplaces, and door or doorways. Again, multiply
width times the height and add the figures
together. Subtract this number from the first
number and add 10% so you will have a little paint
left over for touch-ups or repairs.

To calculate the number of
cans of paint you need, divide your square footage
number by the spread rate of the paint.

That’s how to estimate paint
requirements for your paint project. As a side
note; to estimate the amount of paint needed to
paint the baseboard, door, and window trim, figure
it at about 25% of the total amount of wall paint.
